About this walkthrough

This is a complete walkthrough for Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars.

Using this walkthrough will get you through the game with the least amount of time and wandering around, but may spoil the game and fun of exploring.

AdventureDoor walkthroughs use terms and phrases which try to match in-game texts as closely as possible. In some cases this means that walkthroughs have grammatical and typographical errors (such as "open door" instead of "open the door"), but it makes following the walkthrough easier while playing the game.

Items which can be picked up as new inventory items and items which can be constructed by combining or using other items are written with bold text for emphasis.


Paris, France

- After the opening scene, pick up a newspaper from the ground which is by the lamp post.
- Go inside the café.
- Examine the body on the floor.
- Talk to the waitress about everything.
- Exit the café and go north towards the construction site.
- Inspector Rosso will take you back to the café for questioning. Talk with him, and then you will exit the café again. Rosso gives you his card.
- Outside, talk to the journalist (Nico) about everything. Once you get her phone number, you have done everything with her for now.
- Go east and through the archway to an alley.
- Try to lift the sewer cover.
- Go back west and north to the construction site where you met Rosso.

- Try to interact with the toolbox inside the small tent.
- Talk to the man about everything, especially about the newspaper.
- Search the toolbox to get the metal rod.
- Go back to the alley.
- Use the metal rod on the sewer cover to enter the sewer.

- Pick up the clown's nose from the ground.
- Go further into the sewer.
- Pick up the soggy tissue from the ground.
- Pick up the scrap of material from the railing.
- Climb the ladder to exit the sewer.
- Talk to the man about everything. He will become very talkative if you show Rosso's card and then question him, especially about the scrap of material and then about the jacket. When he gives you the tailor's (Todryk) phone number, you have learnt enough.
- Use the telephone right next to the tent to call Todryk.
- Use the telephone to call Nico.
- Go east to enter the map, and choose Rue Jarry.

- Try to enter the building through the front door.
- Talk to the woman who is selling flowers about everything, especially about Nico.
- Try to enter again, and if you talked with the woman, you should be able to enter the building and Nico's apartment.
- Talk to Nico about everything, especially about the items found in the sewer. Talk about the clown's nose to learn a new address. Talk about the scrap of material to get a photograph that Nico took.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose La risée du monde.

- Talk to the shopkeeper about everything, especially about the photograph and soggy tissue. Keep talking until you learn that the guy in the picture is Khan. When you stop talking to the shopkeeper, you will unexpectedly receive a 'Shake 'n Shock' buzzer.
- Exit the shop and go to a telephone. There is one near the construction site, one at the police station, and one in Nico's apartment. They all can be used to call Todryk again.
- Use the telephone to call Todryk. Talk about the photograph to learn a new address.
- Enter the map, and choose Hotel Ubu.

- Enter the hotel.
- At this point you may want to exit the hotel immediately and see what happens. Doing this isn't absolutely necessary, but it shows you how the two guys at the door react. If you exited the hotel to see it, re-enter the hotel.
- Talk to the hotel clerk about everything, especially about the photograph.
- Examine the register of hotel guests.
- Try to take the key ring from the wall.
- Talk to the hotel clerk again about the key.
- Talk to the Nobel Prize winner (the man reading the newspaper) about everything.
- Talk to Lady Piermont (the woman playing the piano) about everything, especially about the photograph, Khan, and key ring.

- While the clerk is going to the safe as requested by Lady Piermont, pick up the key ring.
- Go upstairs.
- Use the key ring to unlock room 21, which is the first room from the staircase.
- Open the window and go along the ledge to room 22.
- Search the room, bed, closet, etc., and try to exit the room using the door.
- Watch a short cutscene. After it, pick up a matchbook and pass card from the bed.
- Exit the room either through the door or by going back to room 21 through the windows and then go down to the hotel lobby.

- Talk to the clerk about the safe and pass card.
- Talk to Lady Piermont about the pass card. After a short sequence the clerk will give you an ancient manuscript.
- SAVE GAME HERE!

- Now the task is to exit the hotel with the manuscript. Walking out the front door isn't the answer. So go upstairs and enter room 21 again and go on the ledge.
- Drop the manuscript down to the ground.

- Go back inside, down to the lobby, and exit the hotel.
- After Flap and Guido search you and find nothing, go to the alley to the left of the hotel, and pick up the manuscript.
- You automatically go back to Nico's apartment, and while you are there, talk to Nico about everything, especially about the manuscript, and study all symbols on it.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Musée Crune.

- Talk to the museum attendant about everything.
- Examine the tripod in the middle of the room.
- Exit the museum and go back to Nico's apartment.
- Talk to Nico about Professor Peagram.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Aéroport.
- In the airport map, choose Lochmarne.

Lochmarne, Ireland

- Talk to Liam Maguire (the kid on the street) about everything.
- Enter the pub.
- The best way is to talk to everyone about everything and go clockwise. Not all of that is necessary, but it's a good way to do it. So, first talk to Sean Fitzgerald (the guy with a yellow jacket), then talk to O'Brien (the guy with a blue shirt), then talk to Patrick Doyle (the guy with a light blue shirt; buy him a beer to make him more talkative), then talk to the barkeeper, and finally talk to the monk. Topics to discuss with them are especially Professor Peagram, the castle, the dig, and any new conversation topics that may open.
- Go back outside and talk to Liam Maguire and ask about these topics until you get confirmation that Fitzgerald was lying to you. If you don't get that, you must have missed some conversation in the pub, so talk to Fitzgerald (and others) again, and then return to Liam Maguire.
- Go back in the pub and keep pressuring Fitzgerald until the topic of package comes up. Keep talking until he panics and runs out.
- Exit the pub. Liam Maguire will tell you what happened, and you can ask a few more questions about the incident.

- Go to the path that leads to the north and to the castle.
- Talk to the farmer about everything, especially about the Ferrari and Fitzgerald, until he leaves and goes to the pub.
- Climb on top of the haystack.
- Study the crack on the wall.
- Use the metal rod on the crack to create a step.
- Climb over the wall.

- Try to get past the goat.
- The goal here is to trick the goat so you can get past it. First, try to walk past it, and the goat will knock you down. Then, as soon as you recover, immediately click the interact option on the rusted piece of iron. If you time this right, the goat's rope will get stuck with iron, allowing you to move freely. This can be a bit of a tricky puzzle, but the easiest way is to click on the ladder leading down, then immediately click on the iron, and George will run to the iron while the goat is going backwards.

- After the goat problem is handled, go down the ladder.

- Study the door-like panel on the wall, and examine five holes next to it.
- Try to lift the five-fingered statue that is under the holes, and it falls down. Lift the statue back up again.
- Examine the impression the statue left on the ground.
- Go to the table, and pick up some powder to get some plaster of Paris.
- Use the plaster of Paris on the impression, and interact with it after it's on the ground.
- It needs some water to work, so go back to the pub.

- Before you enter the pub, check the damaged panel near the door. Interact with it to flip a switch.
- Go inside, and talk to the barkeeper and order a beer. If you have done this already but haven't finished your drink, the beer conversation isn't available. If this happens, pick up your glass and drink it. George will finish a glass of beer in three gulps, so depending on what was done before, you need to drink 1-3 times.
- After you order some beer, there will be a load of electrical problems if you flipped the switch outside. Show the pass card to the barkeeper and pretend to be an electrician.
- Examine the glass washer.
- Some wiring is needed for repairs, so go to the table where the monk sits. While he is sneezing and coughing, pick up the piece of wire that he is working on.
- Use the piece of wire on the glass washer to fix it.

- Go down to the cellar.
- Try to use the lever that is next to the lift.

- Go outside to the street, and lift the trapdoor. Watch a short conversation that follows.
- Go back to the cellar. You will automatically pick up a flashlight and a large blue gemstone.
- Go up to the bar, and take a green towel from the bar when the man next to it is drinking.
- Go back to the cellar and use the rusty faucet to get running water. Use the green towel with the faucet to get a soaked towel. (OT: Broken Sword has very little moon logic, but this is really the worst. George is in a bar with running water and lots of glasses and containers. So in order to get water, he has to steal a towel and soak it in water, and then carry that towel in his pockets. Really?!?)
- Go back to the castle and the closed panel. Hurry up, because if you take too long, the towel will dry up.

- Use the soaked towel on the plaster on the ground.
- Pick up the plaster cast from the ground; it won't appear in the inventory, but you will carry it in your hands.
- Use the plaster cast on the holes on the wall.
- A doorway opens, walk through it to enter a room.
- After a short cutscene, you will automatically go back to Nico's apartment.

Paris, France

- Talk to Nico about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Poste de police.
- Talk to Sergeant Moue about everything, especially about Marquet and him being in a hospital.
- Exit the police station to enter the map, and choose Hôpital.

- Enter the hospital and talk to the receptionist about everything, especially about the pass card and then Nurse Grendel.
- Go to the left corridor to enter other areas of the hospital.
- Talk to the janitor about everything.
- Enter the corridor on the far left to enter ward J-Two.
- Talk to Nurse Grendel about everything you want; it doesn't matter, she won't allow visitors.
- Go back to the corridor and unplug the polishing machine. When the janitor goes to check the power cord, quickly use the red door next to the polishing machine to steal a doctor's coat.

- Return to ward J-Two. Nurse Grendel will give you a blood pressure gauge and make you check the patients, talk to them about everything you want.
- Try to enter Marquet's room on the right. A patient insists that you take his blood pressure first. You try to do it, but just can't get it done.
- Return to the hospital lobby.
- Talk to Felix Hagenmeyer (the older doctor).
- Talk to Benoir (the younger doctor).
- Return to ward J-Two and Benoir will follow, if you had the previous discussions.

- Give the blood pressure gauge to Benoir, and then talk to him about the blood pressure gauge to get him use it on people. Tell him to use it on Eric Sopmarsh.
- While he is doing that, or after he has finished, go to the door that leads to Marquet's room.
- Talk to the police officer guarding the door about everything, especially about Marquet.
- Enter the room and watch the scene that follows.
- After the scene, you will automatically go back to Nico's apartment. Talk to her about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Musée Crune.

- Talk to André Lobineau about everything, especially about Montfaucon.
- Try to open the sarcophagus.
- When the attendant isn't watching, open the window. The rod that opens the window is next to a display case, on the other side from Lobineau.

- When the attendant isn't watching, open the sarcophagus.
- Watch the cutscene, and be prepared to act after it's finished and George comes out of the sarcophagus.
- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Push the totem pole to spoil Flap and Guido's plans.
- After a short scene, you will automatically go back to Nico's apartment. Talk to Nico about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Montfaucon. If the location isn't available, go to Musée Crune and talk to Lobineau about Montfaucon until it shows on the map.

- Talk to the jongleur (juggler) about everything, especially about juggling until he gives you a shot to try it.
- Talk to the gendarme about everything, especially about the juggler and the clown's nose.
- Talk to the jongleur about juggling again. The jongleur and gendarme will leave, and you will get a red ball.
- Use the metal rod on the sewer cover to enter the sewer.
- Examine the arches on the wall.
- Use the metal rod on the right-hand side arch.
- Examine the hole and pull the lever inside twice.

- Go on the boat.
- Rotate the handle to lower the chain.
- Pick up the hook and use it on the hole in the wall.
- Go back on the boat and rotate the handle to pull the chain.
- Go through the archway to enter the caves.
- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Look through the crack on the wall.
- Watch the cutscene.
- Look through the crack on the wall again.
- Watch the cutscene.
- Go down the stairs and enter the area with the circle.

- Place the tripod on the stump of stone.
- Place the blue gemstone on the tripod. It will automatically shine light on a few letters on the stone: M-A-R-I-B.

- You automatically go back to Nico's apartment. Talk to Nico about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Aéroport.
- In the airport map, choose Marib.

Marib, Syria

- The first thing is to find Club Alamut, so go east, and you will end up on a bridge with a carpet seller.
- Talk to the seller about everything you want, but especially about the matchbook.
- He will open a secret entrance to Club Alamut, so walk through it.
- Inside the club, talk to Ultar (the sitting man) about everything, especially first about the photograph, then about Bull's Head.
- Try to open the door to the toilet, and then read the sign on the door.
- Talk to Ultar about the sign.
- Go back to the market.

- Look (right-click) at Arto, the kebab seller, to learn the truth about his brush.
- Try to talk to the kebab seller.
- Go to the stand where Nejo (the young boy) is.
- Ring the bell on the table and see what happens.
- Try to pet the cat and see what happens.
- Talk to Nejo about everything, especially about Arto, and then about the red ball.
- Agree to give the red ball to Nejo, if he helps you to get the brush from Arto.

- Go to Arto, and repeat the phrase you learnt from Nejo.
- After a confrontation with Arto, return to Nejo and talk to him to get the toilet brush.
- Go back to Club Alamut.
- Give the toilet brush to the manager and you will get the key to the toilet.
- Go back to Nejo's stand.

- Pet the cat.
- Ring the bell on the table immediately after petting the cat.
- The cat will get scared and drop an object from the shelf. Pick up the statuette.
- Talk to Pearl (the stereotypical American tourist, female) about everything, especially about the statuette.
- Use the soggy tissue on the statuette to get an aged marble statuette.
- Talk to Pearl again about the statuette.
- Talk to Duane (the stereotypical American tourist, male) about everything, especially about the statuette. He will buy it and give you fifty bucks.
- Go back to Club Alamut.

- Talk to Ultar again, either about fifty bucks or Bull's Head, and agree to use his taxi services.
- You will automatically go back to the market. Talk to Ultar about his taxi.
- Go back to Club Alamut.
- Take the key to the toilet from the counter and use it to open the toilet door.
- In the toilet, use the key to the toilet on the tower dispenser.
- Take the roller towel.
- Go back to the market.
- Talk to Ultar about the roller towel, he will use half of it, and give the half of roller towel back to you.
- Watch the cutscene.

- When you are on the hill, break off a stick from a tree.
- Use the stick with the half or roller towel to get the Patented Stobbart Stick-Towel (makeshift grappling hook).
- Place the Patented Stobbart Stick-Towel in the crack in the cliff edge.
- Climb down.
- Examine a small hole in the rock to find a ring inside.
- Interact with the small hole to pull the ring, and a secret door opens.

- Go through the secret door into the cave.

- Walk forward until you see Klausner's body (looks like Indiana Jones, LOL).
- Search the body to find a lens.
- Walk to the end of the cave and examine the inscription on the wall.
- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Go back to the body and examine the stone head bearing three bearded faces that is on the wall next to it.
- Watch the scene that follows.
- When Khan is questioning you, answer anything you like, until he asks how you want to die. Answer that you want to die like a man.
- Khan wants to shake your hand before he kills you, use the 'Shake 'n Shock' buzzer on him, and when he is temporarily incapacitated, jump off the ledge.
- After a short cutscene, you will automatically go back to Nico's apartment.

Paris, France

- Talk to Nico about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Musée Crune.
- Talk to Lobineau about the manuscript and Nico.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Rue Jarry.
- Talk to Nico about anything, basically you only need to enter the apartment and leave immediately.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Musée Crune.
- Talk to Lobineau about the manuscript.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Aéroport.
- In the airport map, choose Villa de Vasconcellos.

Villa de Vasconcellos, Spain

- After a short cutscene, talk to Lopez (the gardener) about everything.
- Try to enter the house.
- Follow the water hose until you reach a wall.
- Use the blood pressure gauge on the hose.
- When the gardener goes inside, go inside after him.
- Inside, try to walk through the archway on the right.
- When dogs start barking, hide behind the suit of armour.
- The gardener goes to investigate the matter, go upstairs.
- Talk to the Countess about everything, especially about the Templars and the chess set.

- After a short scene, you will be in a mausoleum. Move the Bible on the stand.
- Examine the checkerboard.
- Talk to the Countess about the chessboard and chess pieces, keep talking about things until Lopez comes to the mausoleum.
- Rearrange the chess pieces to open a secret vault. The correct order from the top is: bishop, empty space, knight, king, empty space. You will automatically get the chalice.

After a short cutscene, you will automatically go back to Nico's apartment.

Paris, France

- Talk to Nico about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Montfaucon.
- Talk to the gendarme about everything; it is not really necessary, but some funny conversations will happen.
- Enter the mediaeval church.
- Talk to the priest about everything, especially the chalice. Allow him to polish it.
- Examine the stained glass window.
- Examine (right-click) the statue of a knight. A scroll that the statue is holding becomes an interactable hotspot.
- Use the lens on the scroll. George will automatically look through it to see: M C C C, X I V.
- Talk to the priest again to get the polished chalice, talk about anything you want.
- Go to the far corner that the priest mentioned, and examine the tomb.

- Go back to Musée Crune and talk to Lobineau about the Baphomet statue.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Site de Baphomet.
- Go through the iron gate to get below the street level.
- Examine the door that the guard is watching, and try to open the toilet door that is opposite to that.
- Talk to the guard about everything, especially about the toilet. You will get a key ring.

- Use the key ring on the toilet door to enter the toilet.
- Steal the bar of soap that is on the sink (getting the pick icon to appear may require some pixel hunting).

- Use the key ring on the bar of soap to get an imprint of a key.
- Use the plaster of Paris on the imprint of a key to get an imprint with dry plaster.
- Use the imprint with dry plaster with the faucet to get an unconvincing plaster key.
- Leave the toilet and give the key ring back to the guard.

- Go back outside.
- Look at the bucket next to the painter.
- Try to use the unconvincing plaster key with the bucket.
- Go back below the street level.
- Use the telephone to call Nico.
- Talk to the painter about everything, especially about the telephone call.
- Use the unconvincing plaster key with the bucket to get a pretty convincing key.
- Go back below the street level.

- After the painter ends the phone call, ask the guard to let you use the toilet. Again.
- Use the key ring on the toilet door to enter the toilet to get the key to the excavation.
- Examine (right-click) the key ring in the inventory.
- Leave the toilet.
- Examine (right-click) the thermostat on the wall above the radiator.
- Talk to the guard about the radiator.
- Use (left-click) the thermostat to lower the temperature.
- Give the key ring back to the guard.

- Use the telephone to call Nico again.
- Watch the scene that follows.
- After the scene, when you are alone, use the key to the excavation with the door to the excavation.
- Examine the floor, doing this on the upper level makes George to climb down the ladder.
- Use the polished chalice on the floor.
- You automatically go back to Nico's apartment. Talk to Nico about new things, then leave.
- After the conversation, go west to enter the map, and choose Aéroport.
- In the airport map, choose Villa de Vasconcellos.

Villa de Vasconcellos, Spain

- Go inside the house and upstairs and talk to the Countess about everything, especially about the Countess herself.
- Exit the house, and outside go to the mausoleum; the path is not necessarily visible at all times, as it's behind Lopez, the gardener.
- Enter the mausoleum.
- Take the Bible from the stand.
- There's a long rod leaning against the wall, use it to close the window high up.
- Use the soggy tissue with the rod.
- Use the rod with the burning candles.
- Use the rod with the unlit candle in the ceiling.

- Watch a short cutscene.
- After the scene you will get a carved piece of stone.

- Go back inside the house and upstairs and talk to the Countess about the Bible.
- Exit the house, and talk to the gardener about everything, especially about the well.
- After you learn the "secret" about dowsing rods, go examine the hazel trees that he pointed out.
- Follow the water hose until you reach a wall.
- There's a small hazel tree right next to the point where the hose comes out from the utility room, examine the hazel tree to get a twig of hazel.
- Talk to Lopez about the twig of hazel.
- Watch the cutscene.

- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Examine the lion's head on the wall.
- Interact with the lion's head on the wall.
- After you hear stones moving, quickly move to the left.
- Go to the wall that is exposed, and try to examine it.
- Climb up, go inside the house, and to the utility room where the hose is attached to.
- Take the mirror from the wall.
- Exit the house, and climb down to the well again.

- Use the mirror with the brilliant midday sun that is coming through the shaft.

- Interact with the worked stone that the light revealed to find a socket.
- Use the carved piece of stone with the socket.
- Walk through another secret door that is now accessible.
- Watch the cutscene.
- After the cutscene, you will automatically go back to Nico's apartment. Go through the conversation, which is non-interactive in the sense that you can't choose anything or leave, but you can click through it faster.
- In the airport map, where you end up automatically, choose Bannockburn.

Train, Scotland

- Talk to Nico about anything.
- Try to leave the train compartment.
- After the conductor checks the tickets, leave the train compartment.
- Walk left until you can't go any further because Guido appears.
- Return to your own compartment to find out what has happened there.
- Leave the compartment and try to open the door that leads to the baggage car.

- Enter the next compartment with two British guys.
- Talk to the guy who is sitting about everything.
- Open the window.
- Climb up on top of the train car.
- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Walk right until you come to the ladder that is next to the sliding door of the baggage car.
- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Climb down the ladder, and you will enter a situation in the baggage car.
- Pull the emergency brake on the wall.

- Talk to Khan about everything.
- Try to exit the car using either the door on the left or the door on the right.
- Exit the car using the door on the left.

Bannockburn, Scotland

- After a scene with some walking, you are in front of church ruins. Enter what used to be a church.
- Examine the demon face.
- Examine the demon face again.
- Examine the pile of rubble to find a broken clay pipe.
- Examine the pile of rubble again to find an old coin.
- Examine the pile of rubble again to find a cog and spindle.
- Examine the pile of rubble again to find a plastic pen top.

- Try to use the wheel near the broken window by using the handle. Finding the handle may require some pixel hunting. When it is found, it breaks off, and you get a handle in the inventory.
- When the handle is gone, you can pick up another cog and spindle from the wheel.
- Use either of the two cogs with the demon face.
- Use the other cog with the demon face too.
- Use the clown's nose with the demon face. This is not really needed but can be done for laughs. If you want to take it further, use the clay pipe with the demon face too.
- Use the handle with the demon face.
- Enter through the door that opens.

- SAVE GAME HERE!
- Walk right and watch the cutscene.
- After the cutscene, interact with the torch on the wall.

Deaths

There are ways to get a game over by dying in this game.

Adventure game deaths can be unexpected, shocking, annoying, but also humorous and entertaining depending on the case. Some players want to explore them, while others want to avoid them.

Here is a list of such scenes in this game.
